Nowadays, the trend is clearly pointing towards the use of UV cured inks. The capacity of these inks to print on almost every rigid or flexible substrate is their main advantage. In theory, as the ink harden on the substrate surface without penetrating it, it is possible to use all substrate without preparation (coating). Besides the inks are not "drying" as such they get solidified by the UV lamp, this eliminates any drying risk inside the printheads. Finally the UV inks are a good alternative to the solvent based inks because they don't have the problematic volatile parts that solvent based inks have.(Extrait revue Caractère du 08/11/04)
